Subject :Re:Cyberlink: PowerDirector 10 | 3D Stereoscopy Editer | CUDA rendering acceleration results

I have an nVidia GPU (GeForce GT 440) in an Intel i5-2300 2.80 GHz CPU computer (quad-core). PowerDirector 10 uses the hardware acceleration in some video output formats. For example, mpg4 uses the CUDA hardware video encoder, but mpg2 doesn't. You also have to enable the hardware acceleration in the setup preferences of PD10. It's called "Enable OpenCL technology". OpenCL is "open CUDA language", something nVidia created to allow a standard software language for programming the GPU cores.

Rendering speedup results on my machine:  I rendered a 13 minute 28 second playing-time stereoscopic side-by-side half-width 16:9 1080p project video into a 1.3 GB mpg4 output file in 1080p side-by-side 16:9 half-width format.  The project had nothing except the raw video itself, no transitions or other effects.  The rendering took 9 minutes 8 seconds using the OpenCL (CUDA) acceleration. With the acceleration turned off, the same video required 15 minutes 28 seconds to render.   That's a signficant speed up.  I'll do another comparison after I edit the video with titles and transitions to see if those features are also accelerated.

The GeForce GT 440 has 96 CUDA cores. Other newer, more expensive, GPUs from nVidia have many more cores, which may speed the rendering even more.  Older nVidia GPUs didn't have CUDA technology, so to know if your GPU has CUDA cores and can use this acceleration, consult the manufacturer's specifications.  Newer ATI graphics processors also provide for OpenCL acceleration.

What has been your experience with OpenCL (CUDA) accelerated rendering versus rendering wtihout the acceleration?   Please describe your hardware and software and the type of video you rendered for the comparison.

As I mentioned, this was just a quick test using raw unedited video clips. When I have cut the clips, added titles and maybe transitions, I'll make and upload the finished video. For comparison, I'll do it purely on the CPU and another copy rendered on the GPU. I'll upload to YouTube and post also on 3dstreaming.it, with technical details in the video descriptions. I will render both in 1080p, so people can make their own inspection of the quality of rendering done with each method.   I'm a little too busy at the moment to do this, but I'll get to it as soon as I can.
