Plot Details
To anyone brought up on dear old Wind in the Willows, the Smurfs are hardly likely to please.
But one generation despises the childhood heroes of another's, so let's just say this part-animated, part-live action adventure ought to satisfy those kids who have never heard of Moley and co. At least it has a coherent story rather than relying on familiar song and dance numbers.
There's an evil wizard called Gargamel who orders his ginger cat to chase the Smurfs out of their village and who falls with them into Central Park through a magic portal. He continues to track the furry things down as an anodyne married couple take some of them in before they eventually get home. Their journey is a struggle, even with the aid of their kind protectors. So was mine.
As the Blue Moon Festival approaches, Papa Smurf experiences a horrifying vision of arch-nemesis Gargamel imprisoning the entire Smurf village in cages. Soon after, Clumsy accidentally leads evil wizard Gargamel and his cat Azrael to the village and the Smurfs flee for their lives. Papa, Smurfette, Clumsy, Brainy, Gutsy and Grouchy stumble upon a portal, which sucks them into present-day New York, where they seek help from advertising executive Patrick Winslow and his pregnant wife Grace.
